Northumbria University has a first rate reputation for working in partnership and consultation with the travel and tourism industries. Reflecting the scale, diversity and significance of the industry, this programme studies the economic, social, political and environmental aspects of tourism. Not only does it enable you to develop valuable business skills, it gives you the opportunity to specialise in aspects of the travel and tourism business plus modern languages.
The programme is supplemented by a series of high-profile talks from guest speakers.
With the additional benefit of a year in industry, this programme produces graduates of a high calibre, many of whom can now be found in senior positions in travel and tourism organisations.
Year 1
The first year is an introduction to modern business and management. In line with the NBS philosophy students study subjects such as International Business Environment, Management, Finance, Business Processes and How to Solve Business Problems. Students also take a module in Travel and Tourism in order to develop an appreciation of sector specific issues and how the business and management topics can be applied to Travel and Tourism.
Year 2
In the second year the management topics continue and students study subjects such as Performance Management, Personal and Organisational Development and International Business Contexts. There are also modules developing knowledge of Travel Industry Management and Operations, The Experience Economy, Resort Planning and Destination Management. One particular feature of the second year is the overseas field trip. Recent destinations have included Cyprus and Spain.
Year 3
Placement
There is the opportunity to undertake a year-long placement at the end of Year 2. Students get full support from the Placements Office to obtain a placement to prepare them for final year studies and future employment. Organisations include the Civil Aviation Authority, Marriott, Olympic Activities Abroad and more.
Year 4
All final year students do a dissertation and modules in Business Ethics and Strategic Management and Leadership. Additionally Travel and Tourism students will take modules in Responsible Tourism, Conferences, Events and Exhibitions Management and Cultural Tourism
